I'm lost . Like I understand what you are describing, I can see the two spots to fill out. But do you just erase the display name when you want to use the other again? What sort of function is that?

It gives you the option to change the name everyone sees if you decide you don't like your username but want to keep all your statistics and post history. Or at least that is how I imagine it is supposed to be used.
